Light for the world Belgium //-

Odette Lunettes is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and to mark the occasion, Eline De Munck is announcing a special collaboration with Light For The World, an organization that provides eye care in developing countries.  To personally experience the impact of this initiative, Eline traveled to Burundi, where she witnessed the life-changing work being done. Through medical procedures, training, and education, they help thousands of people worldwide—making it the perfect way to celebrate the anniversary year in a meaningful way.

Light for the World Belgium is a recognized NGO dedicated to combating preventable blindness and improving the quality of life for people with visual impairments in Sub-Saharan Africa. Their mission is to make eye care accessible and promote inclusion so that everyone—regardless of their visual impairments—has the opportunity to learn, work, and live independently.

They focus primarily on countries such as Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania, where they support eye clinics, train local healthcare providers, and provide tools such as glasses and surgeries to prevent or treat blindness. In addition, they advocate for inclusive education, so that children with visual impairments can participate in regular education and are not excluded from opportunities for a better future.

What is cataract?

Cataract is a clouding of the eye lens that causes people to see blurry, as if they are looking through a dirty window. Without surgery, vision can worsen over time and eventually lead to complete blindness.

In Belgium, cataract is almost always treated on time, but in developing countries, that is not always the case. There, people can remain blind for years due to a condition that can be corrected with a simple procedure.

With a surgery that lasts only 20 minutes, the cloudy lens is replaced with an artificial lens, restoring vision immediately.

Why is their work important?

  • Every 5 seconds, someone loses their sight somewhere in the world.
  • Every minute, a child is born blind.
  • 1 billion people worldwide live with a visual impairment.
  • 90% of vision loss in developing countries is preventable or treatable.

In Belgium, cataract rarely leads to blindness, but in Africa, it does due to poverty, distance from care, and a lack of eye specialists.

To support this mission, we donate a pair of glasses to Light for the World with every sale. In this way, we help people with visual impairments see better and improve their quality of life.
